无人问津的角落,时间悄无声息逝去。

岑越崎将笔尖轻轻搁下,叹了口气。
不论他重复多少次,记忆仍然似无底洞般无情的吞噬着他学过和在学的知识,与之伴随的是失落、质疑还有无限的压力。
他望向窗外渐暗的天色,暮色如墨晕染开来,远处灯火次第亮起。
没了他,世界依旧照常运转。

What is Romanticism?
Romanticism is the primitive, the untutored(原始的), it is youth, the exuberant(旺盛的) sense of life of the natural man, but it is also pallor(苍白无力的), fever(热病), disease, decadence(坠落) the maladie du siecle(世纪病), La Belle Dame Sans Merci(无情的美女), the Dance of Death, indeed Death itself.

It is the confused teeming fullness and richness of life- Fille des Lebens(生活的丰盈)inexhaustible multiplicity(不可穷尽的多样性), turbulence(骚动), violence, conflict, chaos, but also it is peace, oneness(合一) with the great 'IAm', harmony with the natural order, the music of the spheres(天穹), dissolution(融合) in the eternal(不朽的) all-containing (包容万物)spirit.
It is the strange, the exotic(异域风情的), the grotesque(奇异的), the mysterious, the supernatural(超自然的), ruins(废墟), moonlight, enchanted(魔法的) castles, hunting horns(狩猎的号角), elves(精灵), giants, grif fins(狮身鹫首的怪兽), falling water, the old mill (磨坊)on the Floss, darkness and the powers of darkness, phantoms(幽灵), vampires(吸血鬼), nameless(不可名状的) terror, the irrational(非理性), the unutterable(不可言说的).
Also it is the familiar, the sense of one's unique tradition, joy in the smiling aspect of everyday nature, and the accustomed sights (习以为常的视景)and sounds of contented(满意的), simple, rural folk- the sane(稳健的) and happy wisdom of rosy-cheeked(面色酡红) sons of the soil(田野).
It is the ancient, the historic, it is Gothic cathedrals(教堂), mists(暮霭) of antiquity(古迹), ancient roots(家世) and the old order (旧秩序)with its unanalysable qualities(品质), its profound (深厚的)but inexpressible(无法估计) loyalties(忠诚), the impalpable(无法触摸), the imponderable(无法估量).
Also it is the pursuit of novelty(求新立异), revolutionary change, concern with the fleeting (短暂的)present, desire to live in the moment, rejection(拒绝) of knowledge, past and future, the pastoral idyll(田园牧歌) of happy innocence, joy in the passing instant(瞬息), a sense of timelessness(永恒).
It is nostalgia(怀旧), it is reverie(梦想), it is intoxicating (迷醉的)dreams,it is sweet melancholy(忧郁) and bitter melancholy, solitude, the sufferings of exile(放逐), the sense of alienation(隔绝), roaming(漫游) in remote places, especially the East, and in remote times, especially the Middle Ages.
But also it is happy co-operation in a common creative effort, the sense of forming part of a Church, a class(阶级), a party(党派), a tradition, a great and all-containing symmetrical (对称的)hierarchy(分层), knights (骑士)and retainers(仆人), the ranks of the Church, organic social ties, mystic(神秘的) unity, one faith, one land, one blood, 'la terre et les morts'(大地与死者),' as Barres said, the great society of the dead and the living and the yet unborn(后代).
It is the Toryism(保守主义) of Scott and Southey and Wordsworth, and it is the radicalism of Shelley(雪莱), Biichner and Stendhal(司汤达). It is Chateaubriand's aesthetic(美学) medievalism(中世纪), and it is Michelet's loathing(厌弃) of the Middle Ages.
It is Carlyle's worship(崇拜) of authority, and Hugo's(雨果) hatred(憎恨) of authority. It is extreme nature mysticism(自然神秘主义), and extreme anti-naturalist aestheticism(极端反自然的唯美主义).
It is energy, force, will, life, etalage du moi(自我的展现); it is also self-torture, self-annihilation, suicide. It is the primitive, the unsophisticated(单纯的), the bosom(胸怀) of nature, green fields, cow-bells, murmuring brooks(娟娟小溪), the infinite(无垠) blue sky, No less.
However, it is also dandyism(纨绔主义), the desire to dress up, red waistcoats, green wigs(假发), blue hair, which the followers of people(追随者) like Gerard de Nerval wore in Paris at a certain period. It is the lobster(龙虾) which Nerval led about on a string in the streets of Paris.
It is wild exhibitionism(爱出风头的), eccentricity(古怪的), it is the battle of Ernani, it is ennui(倦怠), it is taedium vitae(生之厌倦), it is the death of Sardanopolis, whether painted by Delacroix, or written about by Berlioz or Byron.
It is the convulsion(动乱) of great empires, wars, slaughter and the crashing of worlds. It is the Romantic hero - the rebel(反叛者), l'homme fatal(厄运缠身的人), the damned(受诅咒的) soul, the Corsairs(海盗), Manfreds, Giaours(异教徒), Laras, Cains, all the population of Byron's heroic poems.
It is Melmoth, it is Jean Sbogar, all the outcasts and Ishmaels as well as the golden-hearted courtesans(风尘女) and thenoble-hearted convicts of nineteenth-century fiction.
It is drinking out of the human skull, it is Berlioz who said he wanted to climb Vesuvius in order to commune with a kindred soul. It is Satanic(撒旦) revels(狂欢), cynical irony(愤世嫉俗的讽刺), diabolical(魔鬼般的) laughter, black heroes, but also Blake's vision of God and his angels, the great Christian society, the eternal order(永恒的秩序), and 'the starry heavens' which can scarce 'express the infinite thoughts and emotions that fill the soul of a Christian'.
It is, in short, unity and multiplicity(统一性与多样性). It is fidelity(忠诚,即真实反映)to the particular, in the paintings of nature for example and also mysterious tantalising(令人心悸的) vagueness(含糊) of outline(勾勒).
It is beauty and ugliness(丑陋). It is art for art's sake, and art as an instrument of social salvation. It is strength and weakness, individualism and collectivism, purity(纯洁) and corruption(堕落), revolution and reaction(反动),peace and war, love of life and love of death.
待岑越崎彻底弄清楚这篇文章的含义,已是一个小时后。
他有些好笑地揉了揉太阳穴,调侃道:
“424,你这是给我减压还是增加负担呢。”
424没有理解岑越崎的意思,正如他不懂这篇文章,不懂中英文的区别,在它看来这些都只是人类赋予特定含义的符号,对它而言也仅仅是一串长长的代码。
